    First official 50-Star Flag

    U. S. Flags: Capitol-flown 50-star Flag. 8' x 5' 50-star flag made of wool bunting contained in the original Dettra Flag Company box. It was presented to Congresswoman Jessica Weis on July 5, 1960 by the Architect of the Capitol, J. George Stewart who writes: "This is to certify that the enclosed flag was flown over the Capitol of the United States on July 4, 1960, the day the 50-star flag became the official flag of our country." Although Hawaii was officially granted statehood on August 21, 1959, it seems 48-star flags continued to be used in the seat of government until the switchover on July 4, 1960. The flag is in great condition, having only been flown once. The box, though complete, has a detached flap (present), separations, discoloration to bottom and areas of tape reinforcement. Accompanied by Stewart's presentation letter.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
