The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Two Early Arizona Bank Drafts. Two bank drafts 1) A draft from Safford, Hudson & Company Bankers, Tucson, 6.5" x 2.25", "No 6", dated December 14, 1881, for the amount of $280.00 payable to N. R. Vail. The check is signed on the front by Walter L. Vail and stamped in red ink. New Jersey-born Nathan R. Vail (1825-1888), a noted rancher, cattleman, and businessman, was one of the owners of the Total Wreck mine. He was the uncle of Walter L. Vail (1852-1906), who became a major figure in the Arizona cattle industry. He was a co-owner of the Total Wreck mine along with his uncle. 2) A draft from The First National Bank of Yuma, 7.5" x 3", unnumbered, dated July 6, 1918, for the amount of $1.30 payable to the bank. The draft is signed by A. P. Behan and is stamped in red ink. Albert P. Behan served as a deputy U.S. Marshall and was the son of John Harris Behan (1844-1912), who served as sheriff of Cochise County from April 1881 to November 1882. A newspaper clipping from Tucson, Arizona, from 1920, which mentions A. P. Behan, accompanies this draft. Both drafts have miniscule pin holes, but overall they are in good condition.
