Two Colonial Mexico Horse and Cattle Brand Manuscript Broadsides. Each is a single sheet listing stray horses and cattle, noting their brands and descriptions. It was customary for stray horses and cattle to be kept in a public corral. Ranchers, upon arrival in town, could view a broadside such as this, which was placed in the public square, to see if they had a stray to recover from the public corral, which customarily was located some distance from town.

The first broadside measures 7.75" x 11.75" and was posted at "Villa de Salinas Vittoria", dated November 6, 1827. It lists the animals that have been turned in and includes a drawing of the brand found on the animal alongside a description. A total of three, including two horses and one mule.

Exceptionally fine condition, with a creamy color and three small puncture holes where it would have been nailed to a post or wall. Signed "Jose Brijido Flores", adding an elaborate rubric.

A second broadside, 8.5" x 12", posted in Valle de Labradores on November 1, 1828 and signed "Antonio Vallejo", lists three horses and one mule. Each animal is described in great detail including the date it was found, alongside its brand. Flattened folds, with puncture holes at all four corners, and a bit of loss at lower right. A few light ink stains on verso.
