    Description

Two Cody Family Documents. Somehow, perhaps in a fit of pique, someone mishandled and tore several important heirloom documents. Luckily, they are mostly still readable, and as significant relics of the Cody family, they still have considerable interest. First is a federal land certificate for Delaware Indian Trust Lands in Kansas on which Isaac Cody, Buffalo Bill's father, had filed a claim at Ft. Leavenworth in 1854 -- his family claimed, with some justification, that he was the first legal non-Indian landowner in Kansas. He was already tragically dead in 1858 when the claim was paid and proved up. The second document is a "Family Record" prepared by Buffalo Bill's mother, Mary Laycock Cody. She died in 1863, but the record of births, deaths, and marriages was maintained by Julia Cody Goodman through 1865. This lot is part of the Ed Goodman Collection. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
