Trial of the Conspirators: Joseph Holt Material. Nice group of items related to Joseph Holt. As Judge Advocate General, he was responsible for the prosecution of the conspirators, together with John Bingham and Henry Burnett. Includes: 1) Brady carte-de-visite with two restored corners, 2) fragment of a government form signed by Holt as Commissioner of Patents and by Secretary of the Interior Jacob Thompson (later part of a Confederate cabal in Canada), 3) ALS, Department of Military Justice, March 34, 1870, advising on the proper role of the recorder in a garrison court martial proceeding, 3 ¼" x 6 ¾" written on the back of the initial inquiry, 4) October 3, 1863 ALS declining an invitation to speak at the "Young Men's Association of Buffalo", 5) April 9, 1867 ALS on "War Department, Bureau of Military Justice" stationery rebuffing a request to send a fragment of John Wilkes Booth's diary: "There is in my possession no writing of Booth's except the 'Diary' to which you refer & that cannot be mutilated for any purpose. It exists as it came into my hands & must be so preserved." (Way to go, Joe!!) 6) December 16, 1866 ALS signed on the second page to General Carrington, expressing thanks for Carrington's eloquent defense of Holt's actions during a court case: "I beg to express to you my most grateful acknowledgments for a vindication which was at once so timely, so generous & so effective. Amid the shameless defamation to which I have of late been subjected by traitors & other wicked men because of an honest endeavor to discharge a pressing public duty & because of my refusal to fraternize with the rebellion, its crimes or its criminals, such language as yours... is unspeakably precious to me..." 7) December 3, 1857 bifolium LS, headed U. S Patent Office, regarding the refund of a fee for recording a deed.
