    Trial of the Conspirators: Defense Attorneys. Reverdy Johnson defended Mary Surratt. We offer a disbound booklet containing "An Argument To Establish the Illegality of Military Commissions in the United States, and Especially of the One Organized for the Trial of the Parties Charged with Conspiring to Assassinate the Late President" along with a 4-page Johnson ALS dated September 19, 1859 providing some legal advice to Thomas Laurent of New York. Walter Smith Cox defended Samuel Arnold and Michael O'Laughlin and is represented by an 1889 check completed and signed by Cox as trustee for an estate. Cox also served as Presiding Judge at the trial of Garfield's assassin, Charles Guiteau. Frederick Stone defended Dr. Samuel Mudd and succeeded in avoiding the death penalty for his client. He is represented by a free frank signature excised from an envelope, a small envelope addressed in his hand with free frank signature together with its contents, a 3-page ALS dated March 2, 1870 briefly discussing a visit with the Blair's and Mrs. Blair's refusal to go to the opera on Good Friday, the anniversary of Lincoln's assassination.
