Treasury Warrant for Payment of Indemnity to a British Subject. Partly printed form, 6.25" x 3.5"; Washington, March 9, 1844. A payment of $100.00 issued to the order of "J. Russell for Chas. Elliott, Her Maj. CHg. de Affrs for Has, H. Cocke assgn... for Indemnity for seizure and detention of Schooner Eliza Russell." In the summer of 1837, the Texan schooner Brutus set out on a campaign to the Yucatan, attacking all ships and ports encountered. One of the ships they captured was the Eliza Russell; resulting in a diplomatic crisis for the young Republic. The United Kingdom had not yet recognized the Republic of Texas, and this incident almost derailed that it would happen. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.

Condition: With a holographic cancellation vertically written at center, and endorsing signatures on verso. Gently toned, otherwise near fine.
