R136 NATIONAL CHICLE "SKY BIRDS" NEAR SET. Released in 1934, this aviation issue gratified a young consumer public athirst for the adventure of flight. This was the Golden Age; a period when technology made great strides in speed, design and safety -- a time when practical application slowly eclipsed reckless peril. Pilots, with their machinery, were still viewed as social mavericks, but air hours per fatality was improving, and those planes were magnificent to behold. The time was ideal to draw from all this enthusiasm, and National Chicle did so with a 108- card issue celebrating the past and the present of aviation. "Sky Birds" was dispensed over several series, and time has now demonstrated that numbers 85 through 96 are substantially scarcer than the lower numbers, and numbers 97 through 108 are scarcer yet. This near set of 99 cards represents an admirable accomplishment in that it’s missing only nine cards to complete. Three of those are standard low numbers (62, 82 and 84), and in the so-called ‘semi-high’ numbers, five are yet needed (85, 87, 88, 93 and 94). The only card missing in the last series is #103. The condition of the low numbers is fairly flat, ranging from GD/VG to EX, and is highlighted by #20 Rickenbacker (VG), #23 von Richthofen (GD), #32 Doolittle (VG/ EX), #36 Lindbergh (VG/EX), #48 Earhart (EX), #49 Wright (EX) and #72 "Spirit of St. Louis" (VG). The last two series vary little from VG. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).
