1956 TOPPS DAVY CROCKETT NEAR SET. For a fleeting period in 1956, the rage with school-age kids was Davy Crockett. To cash in on the fad, Topps inked a contract with Walt Disney Productions to distribute trading cards. It will never be known if this project was, in the first instance, meant to be just an 80- card affair or not. Nonetheless, 80 different, distinguished by orange backs, hit the retail shelves and were ravenously bought up. As quickly as ‘Davy Crockett’ rose, so too did it plummet. And it was into that vacuum of consumer lethargy that another 80 cards were released and for no particular reason with green backs. Today, a sentimental fondness remains for the orangeback series, but the green backs are esteemed with reverence due to their scarcity. Here offered is the complete first series (orange, #’s 1-80), and, from the second series (green, #’s 1A-80A), 78 different, missing only #’s 4 and 7 for completion. The cards in each of these series were stored in numerical order and immobilized with rubber bands. These, in turn, have imparted mild damage to the "bookend" numbers of both series. However, there’s little evidence of other mishandling in these cards. The condition composite of the orange series is 49% NM/better, 30% EX/MT, 16% EX and 5% VGVG/ EX. A bit stronger, the green series is 56% NM/better, 27% EX/ MT, 12% EX and 5% VG-VG/EX. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).
