1936 GODFREY PHILLIPS "SCREEN STARS" NEAR SET. In 1936, the British-based tobacco company, Godfrey Phillips Ltd., produced a 96-card issue featuring film stars. The far majority of these were American, and therefore quite recognizable to film buffs. The issue was actually formatted as two sequences, numbered 1 through 48, but there are no distinguishing features between the two. Of the 96 different, this near set is missing three cards -- #s 6, 9 and 17 (but, of course, which series is unknown). The cards, which measure 1 3/8" x 2 5/8", present their subject portraits within an embossed oval. The reverses report brief biographies and contract affiliations. None of these stars appears more than once in a series, yet eighteen of them appear in both series. But in those instances, their poses and bios are dissimilar. As we should hope, all the major stars of the period are featured, including Spencer Tracy, Fairbanks Jr., Lupino, Kate Hepburn, Robert Taylor, Errol Flynn, Harlow, DeHavilland, Lombard, Clark Gable, Shearer, Garbo, Lionel Barrymore, Robert Young, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. For the most part, these cards are EX/EX+. None are radically off-condition; there are a few minor stains, occasional very light creases and some with mild corner wear.
