Tombstone, Arizona: Two Total Wreck Mine Documents. Two letters of Nathan R. Vail, operator of the Total Wreck Mine in Tombstone. 1) ALS of N. R. Vail, Total Wreck Mine, Pantano, to Pima County Bank, Tombstone, September 20, 1881. In this one-page letter, 4 7/8" x 8," Vail informs the bank that "Four certificates of 300 shares each & one of 50 shares Total Wreck" stock were "stolen from my office last night or this morning. They are all issued in the name of L. J. Rose. Please keep a lookout for them and for anybody who might attempt to negotiate them." 2) ALS of N. R. Vail, Total Wreck Mine, to P. W. Smith, Manager, Pima County Bank, September 26, 1881. In this one-page letter on a 5" x 8" sheet of a bifold, Vail informs the bank that the missing certificates were returned, "but by whom I am unable to say." Now a ghost town, Total Wreck was a mining town established in Pima County, Arizona Territory, in 1879 by John L. Dillon, the discoverer of the mine. Dillon supposedly named the mine Total Wreck because he thought the mineral formation on the claim looked like a "total wreck." Both letters have various degrees of brown toning due possibly exposure to too much light, otherwise they are in good condition.
