    Tombstone, Arizona: Two First National Bank of Tombstone Bank Drafts. Two First National Bank of Tombstone bank drafts, 8.25" x 3." 1) Bank draft, "No. 251," dated July 6, 1917, for the amount of $120.00 paid to the order of J. H. Slaughter. John Horton Slaughter (1841-1922) was a lawman, cowboy, rancher, and gambler, who served as sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona Territory during the mid-1880s. The back of the draft is signed by Slaughter. 2) Bank draft, "No. 257," dated July 6, 1917, for the amount of $150.00 paid to the order of C. L. Cummings. Cummings' signature appears on the back of the draft. Cummings was a Tombstone businessman who operated several enterprises including a butcher shop. Arriving in Tombstone in 1880. He served as president of the First National Bank for several years. Both drafts are stamped by the bank. The First National Bank of Tombstone was established in 1902. It was later placed in receivership in 1921 due to incompetent management. Although it was soon restored to solvency, the bank closed in 1926. The Cummings draft has a slight horizontal tear on the line where the amount is stated and is supported with scotch tape on the back of the draft, and has a three other slight tears, which are also supported by scotch tape on the back. The Slaughter draft also has slight tears, but there is no tape applied to the back. These minor tears do not affect the text on the drafts. Otherwise the drafts are in good condition.
