The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Tombstone, Arizona: Two Early Bank Drafts. Two bank drafts relating to Tombstone history. 1) A Pima County Bank (Tucson) draft, 8" x 3 5/8", "No. 294", dated May 27, 1879, for the amount of $100.00 payable to M. Calisher. The draft is signed by bank cashier L. M. Jacobs and stamped in blue ink. Michael Calisher, from California, was an early Tombstone merchant, opening a store in town in 1879. The store, M. Calisher & Company, sold general merchandise and lumber. By 1882 the store was in trouble financially and was managed by Calisher's eighteen-year-old son David. David left Tombstone in soon after being acquitted of the charge of arson for burning down the store to collect insurance money. 2) An Agency Pima County Bank draft, 8" x 3.5", "No. 3040", dated November 12, 1880, for the amount of $15.00 payable to E. B. Gage. The draft is signed by bank manager P. W. Smith and stamped in red ink. Gage's signature is on the back of the draft.

    E. B. Gage was a prominent Tombstone businessman, serving as superintendent of Grand Central Mining Company and as a developer of the Tombstone Consolidated Mines. Both drafts have miniscule holes that do not affect text. Overall, the documents are in good condition.
