The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Tombstone, Arizona: The Telephone Comes to Town. Three rare documents relating to the Tombstone Telephone Company. (1) A Tombstone Telephone Company stock certificate, 10.75" x 8.25", Series No. One, No. 6, dated February 1, 1904, certifying that E. T. Ijams is the owner of 100 shares in the first series of capital stock. The certificate is by E. U. Ijams, secretary, and E. T. Ijams, as president. The front of the certificate bears the stamp of the Tombstone Telegraph Company. The reverse side of the certificate is signed by E.T. Ijames and J. M. Robinson. The certificate has to vertical folds but otherwise is in very good condition. (2) Tombstone Telephone Company Telephone Directory, 1902, 6" x 9.25", consisting of four unnumbered pages of 98 listings, mostly businesses, with local business advertisements on the inside front and back covers and on the outside back cover. The front cover includes a real photograph of the Schieffelin Monument taken by W. R. Humphries, a mining photographer from Bisbee, Arizona Territory. The covers are of a think card stock and are chipped, with small losses, at the top and bottom right front and bottom left back cover. Inside the front cover are four pieces of tape to prevent potential creases from splitting. Throughout the directory there are pages that have bear small areas of tape. The directory has a hole in the upper left hand corner for a string for hanging. Overall, the directory is in good condition. (3) A photograph of A. G. Sharkey, 3.5" x 5" oval albumen print mounted on 5" x 7.5" mount, which is mounted on 5.75" x 9" board. The photograph is very fine condition. A. G. Sharkey was the local manager of the Tombstone Telegraph Company and installed the first telephone in the town. E.T. Ijams was president of the Tombstone Telephone Company. Telephones came to Tombstone around the turn of the twentieth century. Three fascinating documents.
