Tombstone, Arizona Territory: Two Early Bank Documents. Two bank drafts relating to Tombstone. 1) Pima County Bank, Tucson, Arizona Territory, draft, 8.25" x 3 6/8," "No. 288," dated May 22, 1879, for the amount of $25.00 payable to the order of Joseph Neugass. Neugass was the owner and editor of the Tombstone Nugget newspaper, a competitor to the Tombstone Epitaph and its editor John Philip Clum. Unlike Clum and his paper, Neugrass was critical of the Earp brothers. The draft is signed by Lionel M. Jacobs, cashier. Born in London, Jacobs (1840-1922) was a businessman and politician who moved to Arizona in 1868 with his brother to operate a mercantile business. He was co-founded of Tucson's first bank. 2) First National Bank of Tucson certificate of deposit, 8.5" x 3.5," "No. 620," dated December 2, 1882, indicating that Harry Woods deposited $20.00 in the bank, payable to himself upon the return of the certificate properly endorsed. The check is signed by Harry Woods on the back and J. H. Harrison, teller, and Barron M. Jacobs, cashier on the front. Harry Woods (1848-1896) was a politician and newspaper editor, serving for a time as editor of the Tombstone Nugget and as undersheriff of Cochise County when John H. Behan was sheriff. Cashier Barron M. Jacobs (1846-1936) was the younger brother of Lionel M. Jacobs mentioned above, and co-owner, along with his brother, of the bank. Outside of a couple of microscopic pinholes, the documents are in good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
