Tombstone, Arizona: Rare Early Mining Document. An indenture, dated September 1, 1879, in which John R. Kennedy of Pima County sold to Godfrey Tribolet of Tombstone, for the sum of $50 an "undivided one half interest in a certain Mining Claim known and recorded, as the 'Red Jacket' with a well - windlass etc. and a miners Shanty."

The indenture, 8.5" x 14" printed document filled in by ink, is signed on the back by Kennedy and by M. Gray, Justice of the Peace. The John R. Kennedy selling the interest in the mine may have been the owner (also John R. Kennedy) of the West End Corral and Feed Stable in Tombstone. Godfrey Tribolet, owner of the Golden Eagle Brewery and Crystal Palace Saloon in Tombstone, was a successful businessman in Tombstone. Mike Gray, Justice of the Peace, was also a mine operator, boarding house owner, and Democratic Party politician.

The document three horizontal folds, with the upper two showing partially split. The uppermost fold has been mended with scotch tape on the back of the document. Two sheets of paper have been attached by glue to the back of the indenture. A 7.75" x 5" sheet, a printed form filled in with ink in which Justice of the Peace Gray certifies that he witnessed the sale, and dated September 1, 1879, has been glued to the middle section of the back. To the bottom section of the back of the document is glued a 3.5" x 8.5" printed sheet and filled in with ink, that records the transfer of the deed to the claim from Kennedy to Tribolet and the date. The indenture document is in fair condition.
