    The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

    Tombstone, Arizona: Mountain Maid Mining Company. Two documents relating to the Mountain Maid Mining Company in Tombstone. 1) A stock certificate, "No. 24," and dated May 23, 1881, and certifying that D. M. Balch is entitled to 500 shares of the capital stock of the Mountain Maid Mining Company. The certificate, 9 3/8" x 4," is signed by Balch as president and J. Stadtfeld as secretary. It is endorsed on the back by Balch. 2) A notarized indenture, dated February 23, 1881, to Godfrey Tribolet leasing several lots of the Mountain Maid Mining Company in Tombstone. The printed document, 8.5" x 14," is filled in by ink and signed by Fordyce Roper, attorney for the Mountain Maid Mining Company and Tribolet. Pasted to the back of the indenture is 7 7/8" x 7.5" sheet of paper in the hand of Jacob Conwell, a notary public, officially notarizing on September 23, 1881, the lease between Tribolet and the mining company. The notarized document is stamped with a John Conwell's official seal. Also pasted to the back of the lease is a 3 5/8" x 8.5" printed sheet that was part of a larger lease document, which is signed by Tribolet on September 23, 1881. Also included with these two documents is a photocopy of plat of lot no. 64 of the Mountain Maid Mine from December 6, 1880.

    Godfrey Tribolet was the Swiss-born proprietor of the Golden Eagle Brewery and the Crystal Palace Saloon in Tombstone. The Mountain Maid Mine was first surveyed in 1880 and its first Northern extension was claimed by three of the Earp brothers, Wyatt, Virgil, and James, along with R. J. Winders. The stock certificate is in excellent condition. The lease has tears, mended with tape, along the horizontal folds and is chipped along the edges. It is in fair condition.
