Tombstone, Arizona: Letter by Leading Western Expert on Gunshot Wounds. ALS by G. E. Goodfellow, 7.75" x 9.25", dated February 7, 1881, Tombstone, to the mayor and council of Tombstone, in which Goodfellow requests "the appointment of Health Officer." George E. Goodfellow (1855-1910) was born in California and attended Wooster University Medical School in Ohio. He arrived in Tombstone in 1880 and became a leading expert on gunshot wounds, and in Tombstone he had the opportunity to treat many such wounds suffered by both outlaws and lawmen. His testimony aided the Earp brothers and Doc Holiday in their acquittal of murder charges after the shootout near the O.K. Corral. Known for hard drinking and his boxing skills, Goodfellow left Tombstone in 1889 to establish a medical practice in Tucson and subsequently moved to San Francisco. He died in Los Angeles. The letter has vertical and horizontal folds, with the middle horizontal fold held together by small bands of tape on the back of the fold. There are two small holes in the top of the letter, without affecting text. Overall, the letter is in good condition.
