Tombstone, Arizona: Invoice for Second Oldest Tombstone Newspaper. An invoice sent by the Tombstone Epitaph Printing & Publishing Company to a John Gird, a New York subscriber. Dated September 11, 1882, the invoice, a 5 7/8" x 8.5" printed form, on Tombstone Epitaph letterhead, is filled in with ink and informs the subscriber that $6.00 is owed for a subscription to the "Weekly" Epitaph for twelve months, from September 11, 1881 to September 11, 1882. The invoice is accompanied by a canceled postal cover, 6" x 3.5," Tombstone, November 7, 1882 on the front and stamped on back, Utica, New York, November 13.

The Tombstone Epitaph was founded in 1880 as a Republican Party paper under the ownership of John Clum and Thomas Sorin. The paper was a rival to the Democrat-leaning Weekly Nugget, which was established a year earlier. In 1882, the Tombstone Epitaph began publishing both a daily and weekly, under the names Tombstone Daily Epitaph and the Tombstone Weekly Epitaph. Clum sold his interest in the paper in 1882. John Gird was the father of Richard Gird, who became quite wealthy operating the Tombstone Mining & Milling Company. Richard Gird served Tombstone as its first postmaster and mayor. The invoice is in excellent condition and the postal cover has very faint handwriting written vertically in ink, probably in the hand of John Gird, but in no way detracts from the envelope's good condition.
