Tombstone, Arizona: Important 1881 Petition for Appointment of H. F. Price as City Assessor. Signed by 30 of the city's leading businessmen, including Wells Spicer, who as Justice of the Peace presided over the preliminary hearing following the O.K. Corral gunfight. After proceedings in which Spicer seemed to favor the defense, he ruled that he could find no criminal behavior on the part of the Earps and Doc Holliday, sparing them a trial over the strong objections of the prosecutor and the Clanton faction. Spicer was criticized editorially in the Epitaph and Nugget, and he received death threats. 7.75" x 12.25". Excellent condition.

Prominent in Arizona mining circles, Spicer also practiced mining law and was the first Master of King Solomon Masonic Lodge #5, founded in Tombstone in March, 1881. But his mining ventures were less than successful, and he disappeared in the Arizona desert in 1887, thought by some to have died of exposure, others to have taken his own life, and by others to have faked his death to decamp to Mexico to evade creditors. His autography is very rare and sought-after by O.K. Corral collectors.

Very few original documents bearing so many noteworthy Tombstone signatures have survived. Many of the names are referenced in Lynn R. Bailey's Cochise County Stalwarts.
