    The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

    Tombstone, Arizona: Gambler Archie McBride and the Grand Hotel. Two documents relating to gambler Archibald McBride and the Grand Hotel he managed. 1) ALS from Jacob Strahle & Company, San Francisco, to the Agency Pima County Bank, Tombstone, dated March 14, 1882, concerning a contract for a new pool table for the Grand Hotel. The letter, 5.25" x 8.5,"and written on both sides, is on the letterhead of Jacob Strahle & Company, which sold billiard and pool tables. 2) A check drawn on the Agency Puma County Bank for a payment of $50.00 to "Hawkins Boaman & Co", signed by Archibald McBride. The check, 6.5" x 2.75," was stamped by the bank on April 29, 1882. Archie McBride, a noted gambler, served as manager of the Grand Hotel in Tombstone, which opened in 1880. By April 1882, when he signed this check, he was very ill with consumption.

    He died on May 15, 1882 and buried in Tombstone's famous Boot Hill Cemetery, leaving his wide to manage the hotel, which burned to the ground about two months later. Hawkins Bowman & Company was a wholesale liquor dealer in Tombstone. Both the letter and check are in excellent condition.
