    The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

    Tombstone, Arizona: Four Business Documents. Four business documents which provide a glimpse of business activity in Tombstone during the 1880s. 1) A certification, dated March 20, 1882 and written in ink on a billhead of J. H. Greer, proprietor of a drugstore in Tombstone, that a J. R. Moore, is, upon examination, "in good physical condition." The document, 5.5" x 8.5", is signed by Greer. Greer, an M.D., conducted the physical examination to provide a potential employer of Moore that he was in good condition and free from disease. 2) A paid invoice of $22.00 on a Pioneer Livery, Feed & Sale Stable billhead, 8.5" x 7" dated January 1885. The business was owned by Bramer Brown and Frank Hare. 3) A paid invoice of $36.35 on a L. W. Blinn Lumber Company billhead, 8.5" x 7", dated November 29, 1884. The invoice, stamped "Paid" in blue ink, is made out to the cattle firm of Bayless and Berkalew. The firm was founded by J. H. Bayless and Jehiel W. Berkalew around 1883. The L. W. Blinn established his lumber company in Tombstone and soon owned branches in various mining towns in Arizona and New Mexico, while expanding into California. 5) A document, 9 1/8" x 8 1/8", dated February 27, 1886, whereby Treasurer and Ex-Officio Tax Collector of Cochise County, Arizona Territory, sold property worth $12.63 as an assessment for unpaid taxes. The document is a printed form that is filled in by A. J. Ritter, Treasurer and Ex-Officio Tax Collector. The Tombstone property sold included "Lot 22 Block 78" and "8 Head Oxen." Except for the usual folds, these documents are in good condition.
