Tombstone, Arizona: Forged Check and Letter of Explanation. Two rare documents relating to the Contention Mill and Mining Company. 1) A forged check from the Contention Mill and Mining Company, 8.5" x 3.25", "No. 324", dated August 8, 1881, for the amount of $2,737.50, payable to Charles G. Young for 365 cords of wood. The funds were charged to the Mill account. The check was signed by J. H. White, superintendent of the Contention Mine and purportedly by D. J. Bousfield, who was in charge of the Mill and Mining Company. 2) An incomplete handwritten (in ink) letter, on both sides of an 8" x 10" lined sheet, dated August 8, 1881, addressed to one W. E. Dean from the forger, claiming that he is "crazy, crazy from the use of liquor. I can assign no other cause for that which I have done can only have been prompted by the devil or insanity. For weeks I have been nearly wild from the use of liquor and today I consummated a life folly by using a check with D. J. Bousfield's name forged upon it. Had it cashed and have thrown most of it away gambling with the remainder." He goes on to write that he is on his way out of town with only $100 left and begs forgiveness for his family's sake. A wonderful set of documents on crime in early Tombstone. The check has a few small holes, but otherwise is in good condition. The letter has vertical and horizontal folds, with the middle horizontal fold showing weakness and tearing along the middle fold, especially at the intersections of the horizontal and vertical folds, without affecting text. Otherwise, the letter is in good condition.
