Tombstone, Arizona: Early Mining Claim Document. ALS by D. S. Chamberlin, June 4, 1879, on 8" x 9 7/8" lined sheet, certifying the sale and delivery "into the possession of John R. Kennedy all my right, title, and Interest in a certain mining claim Known & Recorded as the Red Jacket...situated in the Tombstone Mining District Pima County, A.T. for & in Consideration of the Sum of Forty Dollars the Receipt of which is hereby acknowledged." Chamberlin sold half-interest of his Red Jacket mining claim. Pasted to the back of the top of Chamberlin's letter is a 3.5" x 8.5" cover of a document, dated December 30, 1879 in which Kennedy transferred the deed to property to one Godfrey Tribolet. If Kennedy transferred his Red Jacket mining claim in this document, this means that he owned it for less than seven months. The letter is creased along the horizontal folds with no loss of text. Although there are glue stains on the backs of the two attached documents where they are attached, the condition of the letter is good. Documents from Tombstone in 1879 are rare.
