Three-Piece Receipt Collection: Sick Slaves Purchased in Havana by Francis Nicholls and Dr. William Frost. Three one-page receipts, written in April and March, 1812. The first document signed by Nicholls is dated March 8 (7.75" x 6"), and records payment received from Frost for half of the cost of the purchase "six sick negroes". The document goes on to give detail about the use of funds "to go toward their maintainance & clotheing [sic]" as well as a room "fitted in such order as will be necessary for the negroes' comfort." A second document, dated March 1812 (5.75" x 11.25"), outlines the "Expence [sic] of the Negros [sic]" and lists costs for housing and their medical treatment. The last item, dated April 20 (4" x 8.5"), notes that "Twenty one Dollars and three bits" was paid "for Medicine and Nurseing [sic] six sick negroes." All items in this lot are fresh and clean.

The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) resulted in the collapse of the world's largest sugar-producing zone in the Caribbean. Spain took advantage of this by rapidly expanding its sugar crops in Cuba. With large-scale sugar production, Cuba became a major destination for African slaves. Because these slaves frequently became ill during their ocean voyage, Cuban buyers necessarily had to ensure that the slaves received proper medical treatment, housing, clothing, and food.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
