    Description

    The World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1884. Includes four maps, three circulars, brochure with general information about the proposed event, and two unengrossed applications for exhibiting at the event. Grouping is likely as originally issued for distribution to prospective exhibitors to solicit participation.

    World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, LA, Grande Exposition Universelle a Nouvelle Orleans, Plan No. 1. New Orleans: Southern Lithographic Company, 38 Natchez St., [ca. 1884]. Single sheet, 30" x 24". Issued by the department of installations to show proposed layout; with color demarcations for railroads and streetcars. One large chip at right edge (about 1.5" x 1.5", irregular) affecting border; tape repair along left edge, a few clean tears and deep folds.

New Orleans: Southern Lithographic Company, 38 Natchez St., [ca. 1884]. Single sheet, 38" x 28". With some color in outline and inset maps of the New Orleans in 1770, Eadsport with lighthouse, Railroad map of Louisiana and Texas, a view of New Orleans in 1719, and a bird's-eye-view of the Exposition. With deep folds and two clean separations occurring at folds.

New Orleans: Southern Lithographic Company [ca. 1884]. Single sheet, 30" x 24". Showing the floor plan, organized around a Music Hall at center, Scale 50 feet = 1 inch. With multiple irregular tears at left, 6" strip of tape at left edge; and bit of paper loss (0.25" x 0.5") at interior fold.

    World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, LA, Grande Exposition Universelle a Nouvelle Orleans, Plan No. 3. Ground Plan of Main Building. New Orleans: Southern Lithographic Company [ca. 1884]. Identical to previously listed map, but a bit larger and with wider margins, 34" x 25". This map also has tears, and multiple bits of paper loss at interior folds.

    Includes three circulars as follows: Circular 1, Special Announcement; Circular 2, Information for Applicants for Space; and Circular 3, Rules for Exhibitors. All three are a single page and measure 8.25" x 11"; they are signed in type by Sam'l Mullen, Chief of Installation. All circulars have folds and creasing at edges, with tiny tears and chips on Nos. 2 and 3; all have minor separations at folds at margins only.

    The booklet by the same title as the maps has 18 numbered pages, and provides complete information and guidelines for exhibitors. With original printed wraps, which has been repaired with cello tape, and has long separations at horizontal folds.

    We have seen examples of maps of Plan 1 and Plan 2 sold individually, but this is the only example of the intact packet as issued we could locate. All proceeds to benefit The Meriden Historical Society.

    Condition: Paper is fragile, but as described.
