    Description

The Thompson & Tucker Lumber Company Stock Certificate 1904. One page. Horizontal 10.5" x 7.25". Printed by Clarke & Courts, Galveston. May 16, 1904. Issued to J. Lewis Thompson. With endorsements by the company's secretary and president. Blind stamp seal. Lumber yard vignette. Fine.

The Thompson enterprises began in 1852 when B. F. Thompson and his two sons erected a sash mill near Kilgore. They built two circular sawmills before the Civil War and another immediately after the war. In 1874, J. M. Thompson took in a partner, Henry Tucker, and started the Thompson and Tucker Lumber Company, among others. The Thompsons were among the first Texas lumbermen to understand the need for conservation and stewardship of the state's natural resources.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
