THE RED STOCKINGS STOCK CERTIFICATE. Most baseball artifacts of this vintage are displayed in famous museums.  The game's first professional league formed in 1871, and it was called the National Association.  Its supervision was nearly impossible as gambling, booze, fixes and 'ladies of the evening' continually haunted its stability.  The Bostons, on the strength of Harry Wright and Al Spalding, dominated the circuit, which also tended to suppress universal appeal.  And in 1875, the first professional league closed its doors in deference to the newly created National League.  Along its brief and tempestuous history, the Boston Base Ball Association continued to unearth investors.  A tangible remnant of that venture is presented here in a stock certificate.  It was executed to yield four shares of the Boston franchise to one Jonathan A. Conkey on December 17, 1873.  It is undersigned by the club's president, "N. T. Apollonis" (?), and is certified by the corporate seal.  (Mr. Conkey rode this pony too long, and ditched the stock - as effected on the reverse - on a George Appleton, dated June 8, 1875, as the league was about to fold.)  The certificate measures 5 1/8" x 9" and was compacted to leave two clean vertical folding creases.  The qualification to its condition, however, is a very well-exacted, professional repair to re-attach a piece along the length of the left border.  This is a magnificent relic - one worthy of the most accomplished vintage baseball collections.
