The Albion, or British, Colonial, and Foreign Weekly Gazette. Folio, 424 pages. Index. Printed in New York, this bound collection contains fifty-three issues spanning the months January through December 1836. This particular edition is significant in that it contains extensive news regarding the situation in Texas during and shortly after the Revolution. Articles cover the attack on the Alamo; the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, "A solemn Declaration of Independence has been made and adopted unanimously . . . Rumours are afloat that a negotiation is actually going on for a sale, cession or transfer of Texas to the United States," with a printing of Col. Travis' letter from the Alamo to Gen. Sam Houston and details of the atrocities at the fall of the Alamo; "Further Accounts from Texas of the Defeat and Capture of Santa Anna" along with a letter from Houston declaring victory at San Jacinto; and the death of Lorenzo de Zavala, interim vice president of Texas under David G. Burnet. Half-bound in marbled paper and brown leather over boards. Spine label with gilt lettering attached. Boards are moderately shelf-worn, but the pages are in near fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
