Texian Scrip Certificate: Document Signed by Lambert Gittings, Henry Price, and George M. Robertson. One page partly printed, 7.5" x 12", April 20, 1837, Baltimore City, Maryland. Here Lambert Gittings, who would die in 1887 as one of the wealthiest men in Baltimore, appoints his attorney Samuel M. Williams to "locate in my name Six hundred & Forty Acres of Land in Texas purchased by me, as Scrip Certificate #142 issued by the Texian Government." Some chipping; wrinkled and torn top right corner; very good.

    More Information:

Throughout its time as a republic, Texas had a large amount of debt. It also had a large amount of public domain lands which it sold to reduce its debt. Land scrip was issued by the Texas government for sale in the U.S. In all, over one million acres of Texas land was sold this way to reduce the debt. This document is an example.
