Texas. The Colorado and Red River Land Company Stock Certificate. New York: C.C. Wright & Durand, [1835?]. 10" x 7.5". Partly printed stock certificate number 911, issuing one share to "Edward Milbourne". New York, October 19, 1836. This particular certificate is not signed by the empresario J. C. Beales; additionally, a note next to the certificate number states that it is "subject to the terms of the grant to the Empresario." Signed by Ebenezer Joseph and S. R. Childs as Trustees, and L. B. Woodruff as secretary. Untitled map of Texas at left indicating both grants belonging to the company as well as "Cameron's Grant", "Austin's Colony", and the "Rio Grande and Texas Land Company". The empresario, John Charles Beales has not signed the certificate; nor are there any dockets or endorsements on the verso, which suggests that it was never issued.

Beales' ambitious plans as an Empresario involved complicated land transfers and speculation that included the Rio Grande and Texas Land Company, the New Arkansas and Texas Land Company, as well as the Colorado and Red River Land Company. Despite the many exchanges of cash and land titles, he was never successful in colonizing, and was often in court defending titles of ownership. Some land transfers involved acreage as large as 4 million acres. He must have amassed great wealth from these schemes if, as reported, the Rio Grande and Texas Land Company paid him as much as $100,000 for a portion of his interests in several grants (from Handbook of Texas Online).

Condition: Flattened folds, with simple filing docket noting the certificate number on verso. Bright, clean paper, with slight smudging to the handwritten stipulation written directly above the certificate number. Slight bit of paper loss resulting from ink burn in Woodruff's signature.

Streeter 1159, who indicates color: "Map without title at left of text, indicating in color two grants belonging to the company." The certificate we offer has no evidence of color, but is correct on all other points.
