    Description

Texas State Fair Medal, circa 1871. Measuring just over 1.75" in diameter and weighing just over 40 grams, this beautiful medal is struck from 22 carat solid gold. The obverse reads "Agricultural Mechanical and Bloodstock Association of Texas" around the edge surrounding the Lone Star of Texas and images of a locomotive, a steamship, a factory, a farmer with the implements of his trade, and horses. On the reverse is found "Awarded at the Texas State Fair / Houston." An inscription, surrounded by a wreath, reads: "To / Phoenix Iron Works / For / Best Stationary Engine / Made Anywhere / 1871." The edges show some denting and there are areas of light scratching.

A once thriving city, Houston suffered economic hardship during the years of the Civil War. In an effort to revitalize the city after the war, the Agricultural, Mechanical, and Bloodstock Association of Texas (which had been incorporated in 1866 for the purpose of improving "the breed of domestic animals and the encouragement of Agricultural and Mechanical improvements" [The Laws of Texas, p. 1365]) organized the Texas State Fair, a project spearheaded by local attorney John Thomas Brady. The fair was initially successful, but Houston suffered another blow to its economy in the late 1870s in addition to an outbreak of yellow fever. Attendance plummeted and the fair folded in 1879. Seven years later, the fair was resurrected in Dallas, where it has remained to the present day.
