    Texas Slave Bill of Sale, 1849. One page, one sided, 4to, with embossed stamp, Jefferson County, March 19, 1849. Matilda Garner, wife of David Garner, purchased a "negro girl and child. . .slaves for life. . ." Garner organized a company of 19 volunteers who arrived at the siege of Bexar on November 16, 1835. Discharged on December 13, he received 1/3 league of land in 1838, plus 960 acres for his service. He was a representative in the Congress of Texas in 1839-1840. In part (errors intact): "For the sum of one thousand dollars to me in hand paid, the receit I here by acknolledge and do bargin sel and deliver to Matilda Garner a negro girl and child." The sale is documented and signed by John F. Stanton and Joseph Pulsifer, as county clerk. Moderate age toning. In fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
