Texas Pacific Railway Letter Press Copy Book kept by F. S. Hodges, Engineer in Charge for the period beginning November 21, 1872 and ending in early June 1873. The letter press book contains 285 pages, measuring 9.5" x 11", cloth over boards. The index at the front record all id the names of his correspondents as well as the surveys and reports included. The book includes copies of letters and reports sent to Hodges as well as letters he has sent, making for a complete record of this early period of the Railway.

The Texas Pacific Railroad Company was established by a federal charter on March 3, 1871 to construct a southern transcontinental railroad from Marshall, Texas to San Diego, California. It would become the Texas and Pacific Railway Company by act of Congress the following year on May 2, 1872. The first stage of construction was the 125 miles stretch between Longview and Dallas, which began in October 1872 and was completed on July 1, 1873. Although some of the content pertains to that construction, the main focus is on planning the next stage, moving west from Dallas to Fort Richardson. Hodges lists reports on distances between stations, listing gradations; and orders food stores and forage for himself and the army escort accompanying him. There are letters to and from Grenville Dodge, chief engineer; Frederick Grant, who served as an escort; as well as personal letters to his friends and family. A letter dated December 19, 1872 includes Indian content and describes Ranald Mackenzie's raid on the encampment of Comanche chief Mow-way.

Condition: The first few pages have creases, with a few small tears. A few notes in pencil, possibly made by Hodges, provide context. Heavy wear to the exterior, including tears to the leather along the spine and corners. Interior pages are clean and very legible.
