STUMPING IN PITTSBURGH. Oh, the race was hot as election day drew near in 1960.  Senator John Kennedy, in early October, cared to cement his standing in the Steel City (though we don't know of any Republicans in Pittsburgh).  In any event, to announce his appearances - at the city landmarks, Gateway Center and the Syria Mosque - campaign fliers (this one, for instance) were 'liberally' distributed around Allegheny County.  Fortunately, there was no conflict in schedule as Kennedy's speeches coincided with Game 5 of the World Series (then in Yankee Stadium).  This campaign notice would be a delight if its reverse were blank.  But the pillars of Pittsburgh, ever conscious of thrift, printed these notices with a Yankees/Pirates scorecard on the back.  Typically blue collar, the captions read "We beat 'em in September - We'll beat 'em in October - and Kennedy will beat 'em in November"  EX/MT.
