The Principal of Lincolnton Female Seminary sells his nine slaves

Samuel Lander, Principal of the Lincolnton Female Seminary, Autograph Letter Signed Selling his Slaves. One page on imprinted letterhead, 5" x 8", Lincolnton, North Carolina; February 14, 1863. Lander is writing to a Mr. Gorrell, likely Ralph Gorrell, a prominent lawyer and businessman in Greensboro, North Carolina. In full:

    Dear Sir,

I send my report of sale. The Negroes to be divided are as follows:
    Solomon, aged about 48 years
    Tempe, " " 48 "
    Ann Eliza, " " 48 "
    Solomon, " " 16 "
    Dicey, " " 14 "
    Becky, " " 12 "
    Henry, " " 9 "
    Sarah, " " 7 "
    James, " " 5 "

I hope these things will reach you in time. I have been immensely pressed with business. My school now consists of 83 pupils.
    I am
    Yours very truly,
    S. Lander

Lincoln Female Seminary was a prominent school for young ladies run by Principal Samuel Lander. Lander was a minister in the Methodist Church, and taught at many different schools during his lifetime. Abraham Lincoln had just issued the Emancipation Proclamation the previous month. Was Lander's decision to sell motivated by religious conviction, or did he "see the handwriting on the wall" concerning the plight of the Confederacy and sell while he could still get money? A fine piece of North Carolina History!

Letter is toned with age, with flattened folds, and a small ink smudge resulting from a correction made by Lander. The slightest of separations occurring at the the folds have been repaired with archival tape and are mentioned for the sake of accuracy. Mounting remnants on verso.
