Samuel Huntington: An Autograph Letter by the Man Who was Arguably the First American President. Retained copy, signed and entirely in his hand, of a 1789 letter as governor of Connecticut. 2pp, each 7.375" x 9.25", and docketed in his hand on terminal page. He writes to Postmaster General Samuel Osgood urging reforms to the post rider system in use to reduce delays in urgent correspondence.

A signer of the Declaration of Independence, he succeeded John Jay as President of the Continental Congress 1779-1781. During his term the Articles of Confederation were ratified, and his title became "President of the United States in Congress Assembled." Huntington went on to serve as governor of Connecticut from 1786 until his death in 1796.

Prior to the adoption of the Articles of Confederation the country was essentially an association of independent states. With the Articles, the United States became one nation, and in his administrative role as President of the United States in Congress Assembled he preceded Washington by some eight years as the nation's titular head.

The letter is in very nice condition with large, bold signature. Lower edge reinforced with linen.
