    S[amuel] Augustus Mitchell: A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California, with the Regions Adjoining. 21" x 22.5", Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1846. Hand-colored, with ornate borders; this is the first printing of this landmark map of the American West. Originally issued folded with boards, not present.

    Condition: Light toning at folds. Small hole at intersection of fold lines in the state of Texas. Otherwise a very fine copy. The map has been "floated", showing its entirety. Handsomely matted and framed to an overall size of 31.25" x 41.25" under UVII Plexiglas.

Martin & Martin 36: "One of the first widely distributed maps showing Texas as a state in the U.S. ...The popularity of the map was no doubt heightened by the beginning of the...war with Mexico the same year." Becker Wagner -Camp: 122b. Wheat, Mapping the Trans-Mississippi West 520, p. 3: "Based on ...the work of Nicollet, Wilkes and Fremont, and 'the Congressional and other maps of Texas, the largest Maps of Mexico, & c. 'The 'Oregon Route' carefully drawn, as is the 'Caravan route to Santa Fe,' and this map represents a great step forward [utilizing] the recent explorations that had bounded and determined the nature of the Great Basin. The Texas claim to a western boundary up the Rio Grande is here shown, with the northern panhandle extending all the way to the 42nd parallel, following Emory's map of Texas"; & p.254: "The Accomplishment is of particular interest, containing perhaps the clearest statement of Oregon and California facts that came out of the period just prior to the settlement of the former's boundaries and the inclusion of the latter in the U.S." Wheat Maps of the California Gold Regions 29.
