    Description

ROBERTO CLEMENTE AUTOGRAPH. Perhaps the most revered autograph in the post-war era. Clemente’s signature evolved over the years, and those he scribed early in his career were legible, if a bit awkward. In his later years, it lost much of its legibility, but rather projected the superstar with a brooding self-assurance -- the declaration of his identity became the art of a master. We can’t discern the individual characters, but the flowing grace of that renowned figure is unmistakeable. The medium here is uncertain, but it’s made of quality stock, and appears to be a stadium issue. At 5 1/2" x 4", it has mild damage at the top (just above the hat) and bottom borders. Obviously signed in the early 1970’s, this Clemente autograph ("9") is a magnificent rendering. LOA Spence and Grad/DNA. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
