    Description

Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite Signed "R E Lee." Measuring 2.5" x 4", Lee is seen in this war-dated, sepia toned, chest up portrait in Confederate uniform. The backstamp on the verso reads: "Vannerson & Jones,/Photographic Artists,/No. 77 Main St.,/Richmond, VA." Lee's signature appears on the verso, above the backstamp, and is very bold. Below his signature, Lee has placed the name of the recipient of this CDV, "Miss Emmy Crump." Light chipping to the edges and areas of toning. Several small spots of staining on the verso do not affect Lee's signature.

It is likely that "Emmy Crump" is Emmeline Allmond Crump, the daughter of Richmond native Judge William Wood Crump, who served in the Confederate government as assistant secretary of the treasury.
