    Description

Republic of Texas Navy: Four Documents Related to the Bounty of the Captured Ana Maria by the Schooner San Antonio. The documents follow the court case "A. Moore et al vs Ana Maria & Cargo" filed in Galveston to settle a dispute regarding the distribution of funds from the sale of the captured ship Ana Maria. The San Antonio, a 170-ton schooner, had arrived in Galveston in August 1839, and captured the Ana Maria in 1840 while patrolling off the shores of Mexico. The first document is a summons issued to a sheriff ordering him to secure documents related to the case. It is displayed folded showing a court docket dated circa 1841.

The second document is a filing dated May 13, 1842 ordering P. Edmunds and William T. Brannum to appear and show cause why they have not turned over the balance of money from the sale of the Ana Maria. Brannum was the naval agent for the Republic and was charged with inventorying and dividing the spoils of captured ships. Another court document circa 1843 addresses the judge of the first judicial district asking that P. Edmunds and Wm. T. Brannum; et al, appear before the court and "show cause, if any they have, why they refuse to pay said money..." The last document in the display, dated June 1, 1844, is the final ruling by the court giving value of the sale of the Ana Maria and goods at $6,320.75, to be paid to the captain and crew of the San Antonio, and to the Republic of Texas.

Condition: All documents have toning and scattered foxing. The 1841 document appears to have cello tape along the left. Framed to an overall size of 31" x 27".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
