Receipt For Two Slave Boys. One page, 12.75" x 3.5", Jamaica, June 12, 1714. Docketed on verso. By 1700, the English began rapidly expanding its sugar plantations in Jamaica, vastly increasing the island's population; there was an estimated 40,000 slaves to English 7,000 settlers. These sugar plantations fueled the British Empire; sugar, molasses, and rum were exported to England for sale and ships were financed to return to Africa to collect more slaves and then transport them to the West Indies as a labor source. This became known as "The Triangular Trade." This attractively penned receipt documents the purchase by "Mr. Robt Guttriedge" of "2 Negro boys from on board" for 26 British pounds. Enrolled on June 12, 1714 and signed by Joseph Gilbert on July 7, 1714. Mild toning.
