Rare Pocket Railroad Map of Kansas Published 1870 in St. Louis. Folding map, printed on bank note paper, tipped into a 3.75" x 6.25" book or folder comprised of front & rear brown cloth-covered boards with gilt title. The map measures 38.5" x 26" and is hand-colored (full pastel wash). It is titled "New Railroad & Sectional Map of Kanas [vignette of locomotive, bystanders and rolling landscape]." The map locates railroad routes, stations and cattle trails (one running from Texas to Wichita and Cottonwood Falls). It was published in 1870 by E. H. Ross of St. Louis and lithographed by A. McLean. Pale yellow pastedown on inside cover advertising "New Maps of Texas and Indian Territory. Ready, January, 1871." Condition: Scattered light stains, some splits to folds around the border, small dime-size hole with some ink stains near the top edge. Covers slightly scuffed, upper hinge split.

Ross and his Western Map Emporium was active in the 1870-1873 period. Several factors converged in this period to create a demand for improved & accurate maps of the region, including the construction of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, an influx of settlers (coinciding with the creation of the Kansas Immigration Society in 1871) and the booming Texas cattle trade. In addition to this map of Kansas and the advertised Texas-Indian Territory map, Ross produced maps of Missouri and St. Louis. The Huntington Library owns a copy of this map. It is not listed in Heaston's "The Kansas Pocket Map, the Cartographer's Orphan" or Baughman's "Kansas in Maps". Tooley's "Dictionary of Mapmakers" only references Ross's 1872 edition.
