Ranger's Silver Shooting Medal, Dated September 30, 1846, six days after the Battle of Monterrey. This smoothed coin silver medal is engraved with "Rangers 2d Shot September 30, 1846." The reverse is blank. A silver ring is looped through a small hole at the top of the medal. The silver medal has a diameter of near one and two-fifths and is attached to velvet backing; with frame (3.5" x 1.25" x 4.5").

This medal is connected to Texas Rangers in Colonel Jack Hays' 1st Regiment, Texas Mounted Rifles. The regiment fought with U.S. regulars and volunteers under General Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Monterrey (September 21-24, 1846). Colonel Hays commanded the regiment from June 24 until they mustered out of service on September 30, the date of this shooting competition. The men, however, did not leave Monterrey then. According to Samuel Reid's recollections in "The Scouting Expeditions of McCulloch's Texas Rangers," the Rangers "spent the remaining few days in strolling about and visiting our friends, until a party should be made up in sufficient numbers to return to Comargo," visiting General Taylor just before they departed ([Philadelphia: G. B. Zieber and Co., 1848], 225, 227).
