Railroad Broadside with Map: "Solid for Texas. The Iron Mountain Route is now Running Two Solid Trains from St. Louis to the South-West." Single sheet, 10.5" x 28.25". Printed in St. Louis, Missouri by Times Printing House. Circa late 1880s. Advertising promoting railroad routes of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and related lines with map showing routes from as far north as Iowa and Nebraska to Texas. According to Who's who in Railroading and Rail Transit (1906 edition, p. 605) Henry C. Townsend who is listed as general passenger and ticket agent assumed this role for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and Iron Mountain Route in 1884, making it likely that this broadside dates from around this time. At bottom: "Parties wishing Maps, Time Tables, or Special Information, and particularly those seeking Home in Texas address" then listing agents in Utica, New York and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. A scarce broadside promoting both emigration and tourism to Texas.

Condition: Scattered dampstaining at margins does not detract from overall eye appeal. Bit of paper loss at top center, affecting mainly blank margin, and just the border of design.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
