    More Information:

In early 1842, Mexico, which had never accepted Texas independence, invaded Texas. By early March, the Mexican Army under Gen. Woll easily took control of Goliad, Refugio, and Victoria. They then marched toward San Antonio. Meanwhile, James Davis and his Texan volunteers fought Col. Antonio Canales Rosillo, who had also led a Mexican campaign into southeastern Texas. Canales was victorious, but the victory would soon turn to disappointment. Woll's invasion of Texas beyond San Antonio soon met stiff resistance from the Texans, and they were forced to retreat to Mexico. Canales, too withdrew back to Mexico.According to the Texas military rolls, Jasper N.M. Thompson also served in the Mier Expedition, a raiding campaign into Mexico undertaken to seek retribution for Woll's campaign. The Mier Expedition ended with disastrous results, most notably the infamous black bean episode.
