    Description

POLO GROUNDS "NY" END SEAT.   This beautiful and ornate stadium seat, from one of the most famous ballparks of all-time is considered by many as the 'holy grail' of stadium seats, due to its scarcity and classic design. The Polo Grounds opened for business in 1911 and housed the New York Giants, as well as the up-and-coming New York Highlanders....better known today as the New York Yankees. The Yankees outdrew the Giants in the Polo Grounds in 1921, thanks largely to the presence of Babe Ruth, so the Giants told the Yanks that they would have to leave after the 1922 season. The Yankees had no choice but to leave and thus construction on Yankee Stadium began that same year. The Giants continued to play at the Polo Grounds until after the 1957 season, when they moved to San Francisco. For five long years, New York was without a National League team and then in 1962 the New York Mets were born and they played their first two seasons at the Polo Grounds. They moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and later that year, the Polo Grounds were demolished.  As luck would have it, a small outdoor theater was being constructed in Florida and some of the Polo Grounds seats were sent to Florida and put to use in the newly constructed venue. Slater's Americana now offers to you one of the spared seats. The seat has been painstakingly restored back to its original glory. The orange paint job is baked on and is extremely durable.  The wood, however, is replacement wood from Memorial Stadium, as the original wooden parts did not survive the Florida sunshine and had to be discarded. Memorial Stadium used parts that were similar to the original Polo Grounds seats, which was why they were used to restore this particular seat. The seat bottom pivots up and down with ease and is fully functional. The seat number stenciled on this one is "24" and one cannot think of that number and the Polo Grounds without thinking of the great Willie Mays and his over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 series! Quite simply, this seat is a stunner and would be the centerpiece to anyone's collection!        Additional shipping cost may apply.
