    Pima County, Arizona: Colin Cameron and the San Rafael Cattle Company. An archive relating to Colin Cameron and the San Rafael Cattle Company in Lochiel, Pima County, Arizona Territory. Cameron (1849-1911) was born in Pennsylvania and arrived in Arizona in 1882, during the boom period, and in 1883 established the San Rafael Cattle Company on a 17,000- acre Spanish land grant, becoming one of the early cattle barons on Arizona Territory. He introduced Hereford cattle to Arizona. Soon his brother, Brewster Cameron, and his wife Alice, joined him in the running the company. In 1887 he was involved with establishing the Livestock Sanitary Commission and chosen chair of the Commission in 1893. As chair, he was able to reform Arizona's livestock laws. Cameron relations with area homesteaders over land grants and claims. Cameron built a palatial ranch house, which caught fire under mysterious circumstances, possibly arson by local residents. Included in the collection is a photocopy of a Master of Arts thesis by Jane Abigail Wayland, "Experiment on the Santa Cruz: Colin Cameron's San Rafael Cattle Company 1882-1893," at the University of Arizona, 1964, 118 pages. In addition, there are eight documents relating to the San Rafael Cattle Company, including 1) A Santa Cruz Valley Bank draft, 8.25" x 3.25", No. 308, dated January 18, 1890, for the amount $1,000.00 payable to Brewster Cameron. The check is signed by the bank vice president, Felix S. Haas, and the back of the check bears the signature of Brewster Cameron. 2) A Consolidated National Bank draft, 8.25" x 3", No. 46, dated November 11, 1898, for the amount of $14.75, paid from the account to Colin Cameron to L. Zeckendorf & Company. The check is signed for Alice Cameron by Colin Cameron. 3) An ALS by Alice Cameron, 5.5" x 8 7/8", dated May 1, 1890, on San Rafael Cattle Company letterhead, to Mr. J. Freeman, cashier of the Santa Cruz Valley Bank, in which she informs Freeman that she is enclosing two checks to be placed in her credit. The letter bears the stamp, in blue ink, of the bank. 4) A canceled postal cover, 5 7/8" x 3.25", bearing the printed return address of Brewster Cameron and addressed to the Bancroft Company, San Francisco., January 23, 1883. Also included in the archive are two publications concerning the history of residents who lived in the San Rafael Valley and on the large land grant on which Cameron built his ranch and cattle company. All the documents in the archive are in good condition.
