Photograph: Union General James H. Wilson. Affixed to a Mathew Brady mount to an overall size of 10.5" x 13.5", Wilson, a major general of cavalry, is seen in this full length portrait standing in profile outside of a building, his saber in his left hand and a riding quirt in his right. The Library of Congress holds a similar photograph of Wilson (which we sold as lot 49465 in the June 2014 Civil War & Militaria sale), this time sitting on the stairs and surrounded by his staff, which gives the location and date as City Point, Virginia, in July 1864 (City Point was the location of Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg). Small blemish at the lower edge of the photograph. Mount shows scattered spots of foxing.

General Wilson (1837-1925) began the war as a lieutenant in the Topographical Engineers. He served on the staff of Gen. Grant as a lieutenant colonel and inspector of Grant's Army of the Tennessee. At the end of October 1863, he received a commission as a brigadier general of volunteers, but less than four months later he made the switch to the cavalry. In May of that year, Grant gave him a brevet promotion to major general and put him in command of a cavalry division under Gen. Philip Sheridan. He served during the Siege of Petersburg and was transferred west to serve as cavalry chief of the Military Division of the Mississippi under the command of William T. Sherman. Toward the end of the war, Wilson's men captured Jefferson Davis and Andersonville commandant, Henry Wirz, as they were making their escape. He later served as a general in the Spanish-American War and the Boxer Rebellion.
