    Description

Photograph of Indians at Southern Pacific RR Depot by Tibbitts, circa 1908. Silver gelatin print on muslin-backed paper. 8" x 6", mounted to an overall size of 10.75" x 9". Howard C. Tibbitts was a photographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over forty years. Wonderful image of an Indian woman and younger girl in profile, clasping hands on a train platform. Train tracks are visible in the foreground of the image. "SOUTHERN PACIFIC PHOTO FILE COPY" is stamped on upper right hand quadrant of image in red ink. Written in ink on the mounting paper beneath the photograph: "Indians at Beowawe, Nevada". The First Transcontinental Railroad arrived in the region in 1868, leading to the founding of Beowawe. Photograph has some creases that do not detract from the main image. Mounting paper has some toning, light soiling, and some vertical creases.
